Photographs of the Massive Storm that hit the Western Cape Whale Coast in South Africa.
During winter massive storm fronts blow in from the Antarctic bring high winds, rain and icy conditions to this rugged coastline. We shot some photographs in and around Hermanus during a brief lull between the fronts, massive swell crashing onto the rocky shore.
Most of the stills were shot on the Sony A1 and 35 - 150mm Tamron lens and the wave shots with a Sony A7iv and Sony's 200-600mm lens.

A small herd of elephants digging for water in the Majale River at Mashatu Game Reserve, Botswana. In the dry season elephants cover great distances in their search for water and will dig wells in dried-up riverbeds, using their trunks and front feet, to get at the water that seeps up through the sand. These wells provide a welcome source of water for other animals, and impalas and zebras are o...

A male lion drinking from a small pool in the Majale River in Mashatu Game Reserve, Botswana. Africa’s most sociable cat is also its largest. The lion, enormously powerful and aggressive, dominates the lives of most living things in the wild. Its strength lies not only in its impressive muscular presence but also in the family group or pride, the size of which varies from five to 12 members. Th...

Africa's largest antelope, the eland, at Matebole Waterhole Hide in Mashatu Game Reserve, Botswana. The eland is ox-like in appearance, with a thick neck and a heavy dewlap. They are cumbersome creatures and slow-moving, tiring quickly if forced to flee, but can keep up a fast trot for a considerable distance if need be. They make a distinct clicking sound when they move, thought to be caused b...

Zebra and giraffe stampede across the dry, dusty plains of Mashatu Game Reserve in Botswana. Zebras are skittish animals and it takes little to make them gallop off in a panicky stampede across the plains. This rather prompts other animals in their proximity to also gallop off, just in case there are predators about that they have not seen. Inevitably the stampede kicks up clouds of dust, which...

A large male leopard finds a place to snooze in the Majale Riverbed, Mashatu Game Reserve, Botswana. A leopard usually spends the day resting, lying languidly in the shade of some dense thicket, rocky outcrop or in the branches of a tree, especially one into which it has dragged its kill. At home in most trees, this large spotted cat is an expert climber, its sharp, powerful claws giving it a s...

    Thanks for the review! I'm considering to buy this lens, it's great to take on trips as it's light. Not really a fan of the bokeh quality though as expected from a 5.6 lens. Seems distracting if there's a bush or tree a few meters behind the subject. Either this lens or save up a bit for the Sony 400mm 2.8

      Hi Jeroen. Very light and short making it easy to hand hold - I really enjoyed using it. Bokeh is pretty much what one would expect from a 500mm 5,6 lens but the cost significantly lower than a 400 2,8! It may be an idea to put the difference in price into travel costs to shoot pics but you call of course...

    Hi Roger and Pat, noticed you used the Panasonic G9 and 12 to 35 and 12 to 60 on your safari. Which of these lenses did you use the most? Thanks.

    • @RogerdelaHarpe
      @RogerdelaHarpe 2 роки тому

      Hi Quentin. On this safari we were still using Nikon but we did however use our M43 systems on many subsequent trips. We had both GH5 and G9 bodies, Pat using mainly the 12-60mm Leica and me the 12-35mm Panasonic. Both were awesome lenses and while the 12-60 has a bit more (rather useful) reach, I think I may choose the 12-35 if I had to. The 12-35 is a constant f2,8 (which is nice), it's physically smaller and my overall impression is that it's sharper. I have no scientific data to back that up - just my impression. Our most used lens on safari would be the Leica 100-400... Hope this helps.

    • @RogerdelaHarpe
      @RogerdelaHarpe 3 роки тому

      Thanks Dave. Nothing huge - just a little unprepared. Pat picked up a bad puncture which we plugged while on the road. I then discovered I hadn't brought along a valve for the CO2 "bombs" - thanks heavens Bruce had one. Alas, the sealant wasn't as effective as it should have been so the tyre still leaked a little. Back at camp I tried to add some new sealant and in the process unseated the bead of the tubules tyre. Eventually managed to get everything together and the tyre lasted for the rest of the trip but it was a messy process.
